Employee Spotlight: Madison Kaplan, Project Manager
What started you on the path to PR?
I studied communications and writing in college. I managed social media and email communications for my university’s alumni foundation, so I knew I wanted to pursue a career in public relations and communications. Gard was definitely a place I was interested in working, and I knew someone here who suggested I send in my resume. So I did, and here I am. I started in September 2018.
What do you like about working here?
I like the variety of the work here. One of my favorite things is working with clients and seeing our stuff out in the world. It’s everywhere. I see work I helped with for Moda and Lyft. I see our work in the newspaper and on TV. That’s fun and rewarding.
What work are you most proud of?
I’m pretty proud of the Moda Assist program. Ashley Clark and I spent a lot of time on it, and it turned out really well. Moda Assist is an annual fundraising project where, for every assist the Portland Trail Blazers basketball team gets, Moda Health donates $20. The donations go toward building an all-abilities park in one city in Oregon. Three cities are nominated, and then people around the state vote on which city should get the money for the park. This year, Baker City won. We were in charge of pitching the program to local media in the three cities to spread the word that voting had begun, and we sent periodic voting updates as well. From our efforts, we received a lot of great coverage for the program on TV and online, which led to more votes and community involvement. It was a fun competition to be a part of!
What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
I like adventure sports. I am an open-water scuba diver, and I’ve been skydiving. Also, I’m a native Oregonian.
What are you reading right now?
I read The Oregonian every day.
